Archives for category: Site Maintenance

Oh, no – I still look the same. It’s the site. With the new year comes the first WP template I’ve found for this site that I really, genuinely like (as opposed to just ‘tolerate’). All normal features have been restored, save for the Dopplr badge (it doesn’t seem to want to play well with the stylesheet). The next task is to add… um… what’s that thing, that people consume online… OH! New content! I need to get around to adding new content. Soon, I promise.

What I’m getting at, I’m suppose, is that I’m not quite dead. I’ve just been…well, busy is something of an understatement. I know, I know – I use that excuse a lot, and it starts to lose all meaning after a while, but ‘struth.

I should explain. I’ve been working an average of 9.5 hours a day lately. And when I say ‘lately’, I mean for the last couple of months, until this weekend. This weekend, I’ve been working an average of 15 hours a day. It’s not that I don’t have anything to say – quite the contrary, in fact – it’s just that by the time I get the opportunity to write, all I really want to do is turn my brain off.

I’m hoping to correct this behavior in short order. While I have quite a bit of travel coming up over the next 60 days (as evidenced by the Dopplr widget in the sidebar), my schedule should be a bit more open, allowing for more creative output. I’m also going to start thinking about giving the site another facelift – Qwilm! works well as a stopgap theme, but I’ve never been 100% happy with it. (I don’t know that I’ll ever be entirely happy with an existing theme, but I don’t have the ‘mad skillz’ to code my own.)

I also have a number of half-started projects to finish, not least of which is the editing and posting of the balance of my SXSW photos. (No, I’m not kidding.) But all in due time.

From the looks of it, the problem with my old WordPress theme is with the links/blogroll display. (WP 2.1 changed the way some things are organized, and that’s resulting in a wacky SQL error.) I tried to check the website belonging to the theme creator, but he’s exceeded his bandwidth limit. One way or another, it looks like I’m not the only one having a problem with Tiga. Hopefully he’ll patch it quickly, because I haven’t found another theme that does everything I want it to do.

Also, I can’t seem to get a hang of the Widgets plug-in. I’ve installed it, it seems to be running, but it doesn’t do anything to my sidebar. Can anyone help?

If you’re actually viewing this site (and not just drinking in the sweet, sweet RSS), you’ve probably noticed some cosmetic differences. My upgrade to WordPress 2.1 seems to have hosed portions of Tiga, the theme I had been using. (At least, it seems to have hosed portions of my installation of it, not that reinstalling it has helped.) I rather liked the theme, although others felt it looked a little too much like MS Outlook for their taste. (He’s actually right, but I’ll never give him the satisfaction of…D’OH!)

Anyway, until I can get this sorted out (and by “this”, I mean trying to determine if Tiga doesn’t play well with WP2.1, or if it was just my install), I’ll probably be messing around with some new templates until I find one I like (or until I get Tiga worked out). In the meantime, I welcome input on my temp templates – you people know how easily I can be swayed.

I’m still alive (no, really), and believe it or not, this isn’t the web equivalent of an abandoned storefront. I’ve been taking something of a ‘blogging vacation’ over the last few weeks – prompted mostly by a lack of creative spark, itself prompted by too many hours at work. I’ll provide a full update in a day or so, but in the meantime…

It should be pretty obvious to anyone who checks in on a regular basis (or, at least, anyone who isn’t using an RSS reader) that I’ve switched from MT to WordPress, so things look a little different than they used to. I’ve only started tweaking things here, so expect constant change for the near-term. (I’ve been told that change is a good thing.) In the interim, if you see anything amiss, please let me know.

(Oh, and for those of you who ARE using RSS readers, I suspect the feed address has changed – links are in the sidebar.)
